I have some slides in a PowerPoint presentation that I would really
like to use in another presentation. Can I copy the slides from one
presentation to another?
A. In PowerPoint, open your new slide show and choose Insert, Slides
From Files. When the Slide Finder dialog box opens, click Browse.
Locate the file from which you want to copy slides and click to select
it. Next click Open to open the file and close the dialog box.
In Slide Finder, click Display. Now click a slide you want to add
to your new show, then click Insert. Repeat for as many slides as
you need to copy, then click Close.

Is there a quick way to invert text objects?
A. Although you can rotate objects by clicking the Free Rotate button
on the Drawing toolbar, there is an even quicker way. Simply select
the text box that contains the object. Then, drag one of the top handles
downward until the cursor is below the bottom margin of the object,
and release the mouse button. The text object is now upside down,
as if you'd rotated 180 degrees. You may need to reposition the image
to achieve the desired results.

Can I save a PowerPoint 97 presentation as a series of Web pages?
A. You can save a slide presentation as a series of Web pages complete
with navigation buttons using the Save as HTML Wizard in PowerPoint.
To use this Wizard you must install the Web Page Authoring (HTML)
application from your Office 97 CD. If PowerPoint has grayed out the
Save as HTML option, the Authoring package is not installed, so pop
in the Office 97 CD and go through a custom installation, selecting
the package.

I would like to be able to use some special symbols as bullets in
PowerPoint slides. Can I do this?
A. Yes, you can use symbols as bullets. Let's use Wingdings for our
example.

Format, Bullet. When the Bullet dialog box opens, click the arrow
at the right side of the Bullets From list box to expand the list.
Scroll through the list and locate Symbols, or Wingdings. Select
Wingdings, then click the symbol you would like to use as a bullet.
Finally, click OK to add the symbol to your slide and to close the
dialog box.

I recently inserted one of the movies from the ClipArt Gallery into
a PowerPoint slide. The only problem I see is that the movie won't
start as soon as the slide opens. Is there some way to force the movie
to start automatically?
A. Run PowerPoint and open a blank slide. Now choose Insert, Picture,
ClipArt. When the Clip Gallery opens, click the Videos tab. Select
a video and click Insert.
Now let's get it to start as soon as the slide opens. Right-click
the video picture and choose Custom Animation. When the Custom Animation
dialog box opens, click the Timing tab. Select the Animate and Automatically
radio buttons. Set the time to zero seconds (the default) and click
OK to close the dialog box and record your selection.
To view the show, choose Slide Show, View Show. As soon as the slide
opens, the video begins to play.
-
Why can't I rotate a clip art image?
A. PowerPoint won't seem to let you no matter how many times you try.
But, before you give up, use the Ungroup command on the Drawing toolbar.
Now choose the Regroup command from the Drawing toolbar. You'll notice
that the Free Rotate tool that was originally unavailable, is now
accessible. You can now rotate the clip art you couldn't rotate earlier.
-
What are Guides and how do I use them?
A. Guides are dotted straight lines, both horizontal and vertical,
used to visually align objects. In case you don't see them on your
slide select the View Menu and click on Guides. When an object is
close to a guide, its corner or center, whichever is closer, snaps
to the guide. Guides are visible in the Slide view only. You can add,
move, and delete guides.
-
-
To move a guide: Click on the dotted line and drag it to the desired
location.
-
-
To create multiple guides: While holding Ctrl down, click & drag
an existing guide.
-
-
To delete a guide: Simply click and drag the guide off the slide
to delete it.
-
Can I jump to a different slide while viewing the slide show?
A. Yet another undocumented feature of PowerPoint is the users ability
to jump to a particular slide in the midst of a presentation by simply
typing in the slide number and pressing Enter. For example: To jump
to 10th slide; type in 10 followed by Enter.
-
How do I change the default colors for my slides?
A. Each slide has what is referred to as a "color scheme". PowerPoint
templates come with multiple color schemes built in, which you can
change by using the Format/Slide Color Scheme menu command. Right
clicking on the slide in Slide View will also give you the Slide Color
Scheme menu. You can use this to create your own color schemes as
well. Different color schemes can be used to break out sections of
a long presentation.
-
Why are my Excel Spreadsheets getting cropped when I paste them into
PowerPoint?
A. According to Microsoft Tech Support, PowerPoint has an internal
limit of 6 x 6 inches for this type of object. Spreadsheets larger
than 6" in height or width will get cropped when they are pasted into
PowerPoint.
-
What resolution should I scan an image at in order for it to present
well in PowerPoint?
A. If you want an image to look good on the screen in PowerPoint,
scan it at the screen resolution: 72 dpi. Higher does you no good--it
only makes the files bigger. HOWEVER, you may find that 72 dpi images
are a bit too low-resolution for printed output, so you might want
to scan at 150, which makes a nice compromise.
-
Is there a way to go backwards in an electronic slide show?

Page up, Right mouse button, Left arrow key.

How can I change the speed of the slide transitions?

dialog box, you can select the speed for the slide transition: Slow,
Medium, or Fast.
-
Can I create links that go to web pages while in slide show?
A. Yes, but you'll need PowerPoint 2000 to do it. Highlight the text
you want to link, then select Insert|Hyperlink. Remember that you
will need an Internet connection to be able to link to the sites!
If you will not be able to get online during your presentation, you
may want to save the websites to your hard drive with a program such
as Web Whacker. You will then be able to link to those files during
your presentation.
-
Why don't sounds play when I move my file to another computer?
A. When preparing a presentation (with sounds) that is to be used
from different computers, it is very important to make sure that all
of the sound files are located in the same folder as the presentation
that you've created, and that you insert them from this location.
Sound files, because of their large size, don't become an actual part
of the presentation file--a link is formed to the sound file. When
the presentation is played, the program goes looking for the sound
at the location described in the link. This works fine on the original
creation machine, but as soon as you move things to another machine,
the links don't accurately describe where the files are, and things
fail to play.
The first thing to know is that PowerPoint will always look for
the sound in the folder that contains the presentation, so this
is the best place to put them. You can't modify the links, so you
have to start off by putting the sounds in the same folder as the
presentation, and then inserting them into your presentation. This
will create an internal link with no real address: PowerPoint knows
that the sound is in the same folder as the presentation, and will
look for it there regardless of what that folder's name is, or what
machine it's on.
-
How do I make my sound files invisible in Slide Show?
A. After inserting a sound file, you will see an icon on the slide
representing that file. Select the icon, then go to the Slide Show
menu and choose Custom Animation. On the Play Settings tab, you'll
need to make sure that the box that says "Hide while not playing"
is checked. This will make your icon disappear in slide show. To make
the sound play, you'll need to click on the invisible icon, unless
you set it to automatically play in Custom Animation.
-
Is there any way to play a Sound and Animation simultaneously?
A. Unfortunately, no.
-
Can I use animated graphics in my presentation?
A. Only if you are using PowerPoint 2000. The 97 versions will only
show a static graphic if you uwe an animated one.
